The first racing day brought very difficult conditions on the competitors, as Lady (Lake) Balaton exhibited its very capricious nature, mostly due to the mixing of the gradient wind and the unusually strong thermal effect. From the 10.00 am scheduled starting time to the 16.40 finishing time of the last fleet the breeze went a full 180 degrees from N to S, with large swings back and forth. Its strength also changed frequently from 5 knots to 10 knots, with lulls and puffs, making life for both the Race Committee and the sailors quite challenging. At the end of the day 3 races were run for all fleets. By the time the competitors came ashore everybody (including all officials) was quite exhausted.
